A truly exceptional Southern pie safe, and one of the finer examples you will find anywhere. The original red paint is warm and deeply saturated, worn just enough at the edges to show its age without losing an ounce of its presence. But it is the punched tin panels that set this piece apart — five panels in all, front and sides, each filled with an elaborate, flowing floral and vine design punched with remarkable skill and consistency. This is not farmhouse folk art; this is the work of a craftsman who took real pride in his trade.
The tall, elegant legs lift the piece with a refinement uncommon in purely utilitarian country furniture, giving it a grace that works beautifully in both formal and informal primitive interiors. The single door with its original wooden knob and hardware opens to a fully functional interior, still perfectly suited for display or storage today.
Southern pie safes of this quality — original paint, original tin, elaborate punched decoration, and this scale — are increasingly difficult to find. A serious collector's piece at a fair price.
